I had the amazing opportunity to represent Red Stylo Media at NYCC in the Small Press area. New York Comic Con is BANANAS!! I met some amazing people and had a blast. BUT I found out very quickly that I had a lot to learn about a comic convention this big. Below are my biggest take-aways and each one has a very specific story but that's to be discussed in person over drinks.
- Come every day to the con with coffee, bottles of water and snacks. Prices inside are stupid.
- When the gen pop doors open it's like the running of the bulls...but with nerds.
- hand sanitizer is a must have.
- If you see a famous creator, go say hi and compliment them. They're just like you.
- Every second, you are literally marketing yourself and your work.
- DO strike up conversations in lines. You have no idea who you might be standing beside.
- Have business cards with you everywhere....yes, everywhere.
- I can last without food or water for much longer than ever thought.
- If you think you may have to use the restroom within the hour, you should head that way now
- I am actually more claustrophobic than I thought
- People will literally stand in a long line not knowing the reason or the outcome.
- Every day is different. Every convention goer is different. Be on your toes.
- If it's free, people want it.
- An indie creator networking event means many writers will pitch you their odd stories
- Comic book creators know how to drink!
- The Cosplay wasn't as good as you would expect...but there was a LOT of it
- I learned a bit about the entertainment business and its lack of excitement
- I am a magnet for crazies on the train.
- Always, always pay for closer parking.
- OR be patient and wait to pull up to the curb or loading dock.
