I'm not saying that Artists should NOT write. I think everyone has the right to create and explore their thoughts and imaginations whether it be through writing, drawing or just creating in general. I myself am currently working on many different stories; some of which I will be drawing and some of which are for a later time or collaboration. I feel that artists should be allowed to write...up to a certain point.
My beef is with the current writer and artist of Detective Comics...Tony Daniel.
I'm a comic book fanatic and nerd, as you all know. I've been a mild fan of his art since the late 90's and he is really quite good. I even remember hearing great things about his Creator Owned series The Tenth where he honed his writing chops. If you don't know his work....here go.
The guy can draw, right?!
As I lay awake last night reading the latest issue of Detective Comics, which Tony is the current writer and artist of, it dawned on me just how terrible his writing was...for this comic.
This is Batman. One of the greatest heroes and characters ever created. This title alone has been in production since the 1940's. One of the longest running comic titles ever. And Tony Daniel should NOT be allowed to write it. Period.
As I read it, I kept being drawn out of the comic and fictitious world by his awful characterization and dialogue. I know James Gordon...he wouldn't talk like that. I was amazed at how many plot holes he had left open. I was shocked by how stiff and formulaic the people in general were speaking and reacting. I couldn't stay in the story and mindset because the writing was remedial and frankly, belittling of my intelligence.
Keep drawing the book Tony, I beg of you. Just don't write it. Go talk to the DC Comics editors about creating your own comic or taking on a lower tier character. Not Batman.
As someone who has been reading Bats for way too long, I expect more. These aren't for kids anymore and do not treat me as such. I'm looking for thought provoking. I'm looking for a fantastic Detective story. I'm looking for Mystery. You gave us Saturday Morning white noise.
All artists should write and as often as possible. Artists have the right and should be allowed to write. But there are a few instances where the characters are too well known, have a rich varied history, and have a rabid fan base that dictates the quality and level of writing. In this case and instances like it, Artists should NOT be allowed to write.
